Fat Defined
A major source of energy in the diet. All food fats have 9 calories per gram making it the most efficient energy source. Fat helps the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A, D, E and K and is also responsible for supporting vital organs. Some kinds of fats, especially saturated fats, may cause blood cholesterol levels to increase and increase the risk for heart disease. Other fats, such as unsaturated fats do not increase blood cholesterol. Fats that are in foods are combinations of monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acids. The essential amount of fat in our body is 3%, an American in their 30’s considered to be in good shape has 18%.
